'Guess Again' makes a handsome sight as she dashes home out of a watery dawn sky. She is under single reefed main and mizzen. Brixham men often chose quite curious names for their boats. 'Guess Again' BM346 was the second boat the skipper had owned, the first one was called 'Guess'.
Built 1916 by J.W & A Upham at Brixham for Samuel Holland.
The Brixham Sailing Trawler
Amongst the many letters that Robin has received on Brixham sailing trawlers this one is of particular interest -" I was attracted to your picture of 'Guess Again' very much. I think the painting is superb. The gilt frame sets it off to perfection. The whole thing is exactly what I have been searching for over many years. I even visited Brixham a few years ago searching for something like it what I have now is finer than my wildest hopes. It is particularly meaningful as I now after 31 years have sold my Cutlass Sloop. My interest in Brixham Trawlers goes back to my father who in 1935 bought BM-115 'Lily Doreen' in her original fishing condition in Brixham. She had been built in Upham's in 1921 an he had then slip her and fit a small diesel. Then he sailed her home and carried out an exceptional fine conversion to make her our family yacht. In August 1937 on a fine Sunday afternoon, we put into Brixham, and noticed many out in small boats. Head to wind, engine on to furl sail we heard a lot of shouting and saw much arm waving from one of the rowing boats with two ladies. We closed and one stood up and called "I'm Lily and she's Doreen." Once berthed in the inner basin, they came aboard and you can imagine the general joy" - Brendan McMahon, Limerick, Ireland
"Guess Again, racing home with the catch, I like the colours, the rig, set of the sails sea and sky as accurate and to my eye beautiful"Brendan McMahon, Limerick, Ireland
