This painting depicts reed combing in Mid-Devon in 2003. The reed combing machine was made by Marshall's in 1927, and would originally have been powered by steam. Marshall's have a good name for reliability, and in 1903 won a Gold medal for this particular design.

Today, traditional varieties of wheat are specially grown in the Mid Devon area for the purpose of Thatching. Varieties such as Square Master or Square Head, Red Standard, Victor, and Little Josh. The reed is used to thatch houses in the traditional manner.
