With the publication of the journals of Captain James Cook in four volumes by the Hakluyt Society in 1969 edited
by J.C. Beaglehole, the wider public and scholars alike could thrill to read and enter into three of
mankind's greatest voyages of exploration and discovery. It is from a discourse on the
Resolution Vol." that this quotation from Beaglehole is taken -
"As for the Resolution, that honest product of Mr Fishburn's yard at Whitby, she proved on of the great, one of the superb ships of history; of all the ships of the past, could she by magic be recreated and made immortal, one would gaze on her with some thing like reverence"J.C. Beaglehole - The Journals of Captain James Cook, Hakluyt Society.
Having seen Bob Lightly's magnificent model in 1987, I felt compelled to paint this picture, which I hope
catches the essence of Beaglehole's words.
